It’s become that late afternoon is my favorite part of the day, because that’s when I get to see Tammy.

I take my time walking to the flower store, enjoying the crisp fall air and just being in the neighborhood again. It’s always a shock to the system, coming home from a deployment. It’s hard to break the habits of always being on and looking over your shoulder. Home, I don’t have my brothers looking out for me.

As I turn onto the street were Tammy’s flower store is, I see three guys leaving her shop. I recognize their distinctive way of walking, the one that looks like a mix between jerky movements and a rolling body, before I even see their faces. My body instinctively tenses at the sight of them. They are the ones that were harassing my Tammy and the ones who mouthed off to me the other night.

I force myself to count to ten when I feel how tightly my fingers are balled into fists. This kind of reaction is what got me into trouble before the Army. But the boys walk in the other direction and I let them go. Finding out how Tammy is doing is more important right now. She didn’t fully admit it yesterday, but I could see how shook up she was after their first visit.

The bell above the door jingles as I walk in and I see her wrapping up a beautiful bouquet of flowers and smiling stiffly as she gives a woman a receipt.

“Have a good day! I’ll see you next week.”

The customer turns and walks out to her car on the street. Tammy looks at me and a different smile creases her lips, the kind of smile that you have when you see someone that is special to you.

“Hey, Johnny. You’re early.” She walks around to the front of the store, wiping her hands on her apron. The hair on the back of my neck stands on end when I see how badly her hands are shaking.

“You’re trembling. Are you okay? I saw those three guys leaving the store. I recognize them. Are they the ones that have been bothering you?” It’s a struggle to control my base urge to go and pound those guys into the pavement, until even their mothers couldn’t recognize them.

Tammy looks away and shakes her hands nervously. It pierces my heart to see her so clearly scared.

“Tammy, sweetheart. It’s okay, come here.” I open my arms and she immediately rushes into them, her body trembling. I wrap my arms around her, the urge to protect her overwhelming every part of my being. Her arms wrap around my waist and she presses her curvy body against mine, and a whole different set of feelings and reactions awaken in me.

“I… I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me. I don’t know why those guys bother me as much as they do. I know they’re just petty bullies, but I can’t help being scared that they’re going to bust up my store.
